What We Do

Creating and implementing a financial education model for K-12 students that produces confident, financially-savvy adults.

Financial Education

Our program, MyFuture, focuses on developing financial literacy and related life skills beginning in kindergarten and progressing through high school graduation. This is accomplished via a collaborative program with the public schools that is, as of the 2024-25 school year, delivered to all enrolled K-Grade 5 students.

This program, embedded in the Rappahannock County Public Schools’ STEAM sessions as the MyFuture Program, nurtures a strong financial foundation in younger grades by scaffolding toward mastery of high-level economics and personal finance competencies.

The MyFuture Program

MyFuture is building a generation of financially savvy students in Rappahannock County. We're the first in Virginia to offer a comprehensive financial literacy program from Kindergarten through high school (currently Kindergarten through Fifth Grade and moving towards Twelfth Grade one year at a time).

  • Unique program, taught by a certified financial literacy expert.
  • Progressive learning that builds skills year after year.
  • Real-world money management lessons.
  • Learning accounts funded by learning progress.
  • 100% donor-funded, no tax dollars used.
  • Expert-designed by experienced educators.
  • Changing lives, one lesson at a time.

Learning Accounts

Our in-school program engages students through the teaching tool of custodial individual savings accounts “seeded” with $100 for entering Kindergartners or transfer students, then supplemented up to $100 in annual earnings when a student completes educational activities, demonstrates that they grasp our lessons, and participates in an applied knowledge year end wrap up.

How (Well) We Do It

Our primary partner is Rappahannock County Public Schools (RCPS). RCPS provides monthly sessions for each grade in the MyFuture program, through the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) program, with hands on and lecture/discussion components to keep students engaged and learning.

Our other critical partner is Oak View National Bank, which holds the FamilyFutures student accounts, tracks each student’s earned deposits, pays 5% interest, and provides individual quarterly statements so students can see what they are earning, as well as the impact compound interest has on savings.

Because evaluation is such an important part of what we do, we retain expert assistance to review and, as appropriate, add to our program assessment work.

Sharing Our Model

Our first-in-Virginia initiative is expanding steadily through close cooperation between our on-board FamilyFutures educators, Rappahannock County Public Schools; our banking partner Oak View National Bank; professional advisors; generous individuals, businesses, and grantors; and others dedicated to serving county youth.

To prepare graduates to enter and succeed in postsecondary life plans, increase personal and family stability, and enjoy the confidence inspired by a good grasp of financial issues is a significant, long-game undertaking. However, our novel initiative has potential for replication in other school systems, and we look forward to sharing our model – including our experiences in developing it and the practical challenges it can present -- as we finalize it for those we currently serve.

“FamilyFutures programming helps students . . . choose wisely and allocate effort accordingly to attain education, workplace, and life goals. Developing these skills early is essential to cultivating lifelong habits that translate to responsible citizenship and economic stability. By engaging with families at the earliest stages of their children’s educational careers, we can open so many opportunities and pathways they may have never dreamed possible.”
